The Sekyere South District Health Promotion Officer, Mr. Joseph Asore, has stated that exposure to smoke poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like pregnant women. He said prolonged exposure to smoke from charcoal and firewood could increase the risk of low birth weight and infant mortality,. Three communities Gomoa Mampong, Okyereko and Adawukwa have been affected displacing scores of residents. Three houses have collapsed so far. Several acres of onion, rice and vegetable farms and three large fishponds have completely submerged. Patients at the Assin Fosu Polyclinic are currently stranded due to a sit-down strike by nurses and other medical staff. The strike is a result of the shortage of medical doctors at the polyclinic. According to anonymous nurses interviewed , the polyclinic has been operating with only one doctor for the past 7 years. And in the absence of the doctor, the nurses are forced to handle all patient care, which is affecting the quality of healthcare delivery.
