NHIS has failed, Health Minister must resign – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has failed following the struggles of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr Mahama noted that NHIS card bearers are being turned away by the hospitals because of nonpayment of their claims by the government.

This calls for the resignation of the sector minister, Mr Mahama said.

Speaking to delegates of the National Democratic Congress as part of his campaign to be elected flagbearer of the party ahead of the 2024 elections, Mr Mahama said “every sector has been destroyed, just look at NHIS and I want to tell the Health Minster, he himself has admitted that he has failed because if he has not been able to grow the NHIS and he says it has failed then he has no business of being the Minister of Health.

“He should resign.”

He added “Today, if you take the NHIS card you get nothing in the hospital, most of the hospitals are turning the NHIS card bearers away because they are not paying their claims.

“The whole of this year into last year all the treatment that the NIHS gave to the card bearers, they have not been paid for it and so how do you expect them to continue treating them, the Minister should resign.”
