Real Madrid are ‘considering a move for Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku’

Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian was sent on loan to his former club, Inter Milan, last year by Chelsea after failing to deliver following his £97m transfer from the Italian club in 2021.

His second-stint with the Serie A side has failed to live up to expectations, however, and the club are not keen on keeping the former Manchester United striker.

Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirmed that Lukaku will return to England and that end of his loan spell, earlier this week.

And, with the 29-year-old’s future now up in the air, it’s led to the Spanish giants reportedly taking an interest in a potential summer move for him.

According to Fichajes, Carlo Ancelotti’s side appreciate the abilities of Lukaku when injury-free and would be willing to bring him to the Santiago Bernebau.

The same outlet claims that Madrid see the Belgian as a strong option alongside Karim Benzema, who has mustered just 11 LaLiga goals during the campaign.

However, Lukaku has only managed three goals in the league, and two in the Champions League for Inter this year.

It’s led to his Inter future seemingly being decided already, after Marotta confirmed that the club will not be interested in extending his loan or signing him permanently.

‘The loan was for one season so on June 30 regardless of how well he plays, he’ll go back to Chelsea,’ Marotta told Sky Italia.

‘This has been an unprecedented season. I’m referring of course to the World Cup. The problems we’ve experienced have been experienced by other clubs too and the players who played at the World Cup.

‘Lukaku is a case in point. [Marcelo] Brozovic isn’t the Brozovic we know. Lukaku hasn’t found the fitness he needs to play his best football.

‘He’s still not at his best or the player we got to see in years gone by.’

As noted by Marotta, Lukaku’s campaign with Inter has been marred by fitness issues and question marks surrounding his suitability as a top level number nine for a success-hungry side.

During his first stint in Milan, Lukaku scored 47 goals in 72 games, across two seasons, and helped Inter claim the Scudetto in 2020-21.
